Backup and Replication is necessary for avoiding downtime of your business in order to make sure that there is uninterrupted business service, known as “business continuity”.
Backup and Replication are similar but address different data loss scenarios; and both are necessary for business continuity. Backup is the process of keeping alternative copies of all your necessary data; the scenario where someone accidentally deletes critical information. Replication is the redundant copy of data to a different location; the scenario is a disaster and your primary data source is unavailable.
While disasters are not common, they do happen and to keep your business going, you quickly need to restore your data from replicated storage. On the other hand, human error and data corruption (from malware or system failure) occurs frequently. While having multiple, distributed replicas is important, it does not address these types of data loss in a timely matter, especially if you have Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) in place. Local backups are the best solution.
